Perfect harmony between electronics, hydraulics and mechanics
With automated transmissions, the driver steps into the background and the technology becomes responsible for the operating the clutch and gear shifting. These functions are taken over by actuators(mechanical or hydraulic converters), which, interacting with sensors, engage the desired gear.
Our transmission control specialists programme a mechatronic transmission control system that determines when and how a transmission shifts. Hence, at this point in the development process, decisions are made regarding the tuning of a transmission and, therefore, the driving behaviour of a car: sporty or comfortable.
At Magna Powertrain, a transmission control is initially developed as a virtual model, even the tuning is virtually modelled. Then, our engineers are able to optimise the interaction between engine control, transmission functions and vehicle electronics – just like solving an equation with several unknowns. Next, using rapid prototyping tools, the first real model is created. The control functions previously simulated are tested in practice and, if necessary, improved.
The transmission will function optimally and the shift process will be barely noticeable only when the electronics, hydraulics and mechanics are in perfect harmony. Only then we proceed to the next step.
