Low-loss transmission technologies

All Magna transmissions are based on layshaft transmission technology. Its high efficiency is preserved with automation – and in hybrid drives.

The efficiency of a vehicle significantly depends on the energy needed by the powertrain to overcome tractional resistance. On one hand, the transmission must provide the optimal ratios for the engine to operate the most efficiently. On the other hand, the transmission itself offers considerable potential to reduce resistance with low internal losses.

In this dual role, layshaft transmissions have proved to be the most efficient transmission technology for many decades. Due to many ratio layout options, they adjust single ratios and the gear spread specifically to the engines with which they are combined. Other than in planetary transmissions, these attributes can be modified without recalculating the complete gearset. Consequently, Magna transmission models are available in several layouts that guarantee optimal interaction with different engines without any need for redundant speeds.

Another inherent advantage of layshaft transmissions is their low frictional losses. Their degree of efficiency can be well above 95 percent. The only component that is not positive locking in the active torque path is the single or dual clutch. Featuring state-of-the-art actuation technology "Smart Actuation", the entire power consumption of a current mid-torque dual-clutch transmissionis approximately a mere 30 watt. Engine technologies with more frictionally engaged elements require considerably higher actuation power, in the region of several hundred Watts, significantly affecting fuel consumption.

From manual to dual-clutch transmissions, all variants of layshaft transmissions are characterized by their very high efficiency. They share an ideal combination of flexible ratio layout, optimal number of speeds, low frictional and drag losses and extremely low power consumption for automated actuation. "Smart Actuation", based on modular components, helps to make this available for all current dual-clutch transmissions – through to their hybrid variants.
