GETRAG has maintained a presence in North America since the early 1980's designing, developing and manufacturing driveline components. In early 2007 GETRAG Americas (GETRAG Transmission Corporation in Sterling Heights, GETRAG Transmission Manufacturing LLC in Tipton Indiana, and GETRAG Transmissions Manufacturing de Mèxico S.A. de C.V. in Irapuato) was founded to develop and manufacture dual clutch transmissions, the GETRAG PowerShift® transmissions, for the North American market. This represents a major expansion for GETRAG and underlines the company's conviction that this new fuel-saving automatic transmission technology will be successful in the North American market.

In Irapuato, located in the state of Guanajuato about 300 km northwest of Mexico City, GETRAG Transmissions Manufacturing de Mèxico S.A. de C.V. is building a state-of-the-art transmission plant for dry GETRAG PowerShift® transmissions which is expected to be operational in late 2009.
